A Great Week in South Africa
First, thank you so much for all of your prayers. I am feeling 100%
better and had an amazing week of ministry. My ear is all healed, and I
have had energy and health all week!
Here is just a recap of what I did this week:
Friday: off time at the mall and then evening program for the Refilwe
youth
Saturday: off time (went ice skating), had solitary time with God at the
park, watched the World Cup Rugby Final!
Sunday: church
Monday: Visitation at the hospital
Tuesday: Mamelode ministry (and went to Tuscan BBQ that night)
Wednesday: prayed at the house, visited Refilwe youth
Thursday: School program in the morning and went to Mamelode, evening
out with my discipleship group
A quick shout out for World Cup Rugby! South Africa won in an amazing
game against England, and we all really enjoyed watching it, even if we
had no idea what was going on and kept calling things field goals, or
end zones. Please look at the pictures, as we all went hard core with
face paint. Yes, I actually painted my lips yellow in honor of South
Africa. It was a really great night, and secretly I also pretended that
it was the Auburn vs. LSU game.
You can see that I was involved in a lot of different ministries this
week, and it was just a sweet time in Africa. It was great to go back to
Mamelode (a township) where I did ministry when we first got to South
Africa in September. In Mamelode we partner with a ministry called
Baraka, and there we do programs for the kids and then hang out and just
get to know them. I have become friends with a few girls in particular,
please lift them up in prayer: Sibongile, Dempho, Thato, Goodness,
Larratho, Edith, Lucky, and a few other girls. Some of these names might
be spelled wrong, but I’m sure a few at least are spelled right!
Yesterday morning started early for me, as it was time again to go and
do a program at the school where some of the Alabanza kids attend.
Allison, Jenny, Stacie, Chelsea G., Angel, Mariet, Johanna, and I went
at 7 to do the assembly. The cirriculum for this week was the fall of
man, and it went really well. Stacie served as the emcee and did a
wonderful job keeping the program going and teaching the memory verse
(Romans 3:23). Allison, being the wonderful teacher that she is, did the
object lesson about the worst sin ever committed. She told the students
that she was about to demonstrate the worst sin ever committed in front
of them, they just looked at her a little confused. She then proceeded
to take a big bite of an apple. She went on to say that this act
reminded her of the sin Adam committed, but it also reminded her about
how Jesus was sent to forgive us of all of our sins. From there,
animated Jenny narrated the story of the fall of man, and we all acted
it out. Chelsea was Adam, Allison: Eve, Angel: satan (she was scary!),
and I was THE TREE! I had my hands up and then was holding an apple
between my teeth. The kids thought it was very funny, and I realized
that there is a skill level needed in holding an apple between your
teeth for several minutes. It was great. I also did an object lesson
about broken objects. I had made a playdough bowl and was talking about
how it was “perfect and served its purpose. I then had a student come
forward and smash it. She broke it! I said that now it couldn’t serve
its purpose. BUT that just like that bowl, we could be put back
together, and while I moulded the bowl back to its original form, I
spoke about how that is what Jesus came to do. To put us back together,
to mend our brokenness. Chelsea then helped bring everything in
perspective by asking the kids whether they would lie for 100R. She
talked about how everything comes down to the choices we make, and
emphasized the importance of making good decisions. We also played Simon
says, had wonderful worship from Johanna, and got to hear a few of our
friends sing an amazing song. It was a great hour in the morning.
Yesterday afternoon at Mamelode, we did the same program and just spent
time with the kids there. I love it at Mamelode. These children are
awesome and I enjoy sitting with them, learning Sutho from them, hearing
about their families, playing games, you name it, we do it. I also ate a
little of their lunch which was very strange yesterday. Yesterday it was
this bread that was white with green swirls of stuff in it. Don’t worry
the kids didn’t even enjoy it. Let’s just say it was a new taste! Look
in my pictures for shots of Ben eating all the leftovers... I’m not sure
how he didn’t get sick. The kids were so loving and I am starting to
really get to know a few of them. So yesterday was great!
Again, this was just a glimpse of some of the things I have been doing.
